2007-2008 Season

OF STAGE AND SCREEN
A Tribute to the Past, Present and Future of The Campus Theatre

In October 1949, the Campus Theatre first opened its doors for business with its premiere movie presentation. In October 1967, the Campus drew national attention hosting the world premiere of the Warner Brothers production of “Bonnie and Clyde.” In celebration of the 40th anniversary of that momentous occasion as well as its current position as the primary performing arts facility of Denton, the 2007-2008 Mainstage Season of Denton Community Theatre will salute both the history of film and the history of theatre with a variety of selections that have been performed as stage productions and motion pictures.

The season includes:

M*A*S*H September 7 through September 16
This is a wild, free-flowing comedy! M*A*S*H stands for Mobile Army Surgical Hospital, and joining it are two unpredictable madcaps, Hawkeye and Duke. They can't be dealt with casually, however, because they are also two of the best chest surgeons in South Korea. It's all here, including a little romance mixed in with dramatic moments & a genuine love of life.

Dracula October 26 through November 4
This version by Steven Dietz is closest to the Bram Stoker classic. It is the story of peculiar power, twisted passion, and hypnotic fascination. This is one of the great mystery thrillers and is generally considered among the best of its kind-- guaranteed to get your blood flowing!

big, the musical November 30 through December 9

From the hit 1987 movie, Big, starring Tom  Hanks, this is the story of Josh Baskin who is frustrated with the woes of adolescence and wishes to be "big."   When he awakens the next morning inhabiting the body of a 30-year-old man, he quickly learns that adulthood is not what he expected and ultimately everyone must grow up at his/her own pace.  This musical tale first appeared on Broadway in 1996 and later toured the USA.   The book by John Weidman and score by David Shire and Richard Maltby, Jr., make this fantasy a truly terrific family musical.

Fences February 1 through February 10
This sensational drama starred James Earl Jones as Troy Maxson, a former star of the Negro baseball leagues who is working as a garbage man in 1957. Maxson sees the world as composed mostly of fences which enclose him. He is very bitter that he was excluded from major league baseball during his prime and was too old to play when the sport finally was integrated. Maxson's son wants a chance at professional sports, but Maxson refuses to let him try his luck. Troy Maxson does not see that not all the fences in his life are societal and that he is fencing in his family.

The Sound of Music March 21 through March 30
About a very lively young Catholic postulant in Austria who was sent to be governess to the seven children of a widower, Captain von Trapp. The postulant fell in love first with the children, then with the captain. She left the abbey to marry him, and in a dramatic finale the whole family climbed over the Alps to escape from Nazi invaders of Austria just before the Second World War. It is a true story.

To Kill a Mockingbird May 9 through May 18
Scout, a young girl in a quiet southern town, is about to experience the dramatic events that will affect the rest of her life. She and brother Jem are being raised by their widower father Atticus and by a strong-minded housekeeper Calpurnia. This play is a meaningful work of art.

A Midsummer Night’s Dream June 13 through June 22
One of Shakespeare’s strangest and most delightful creations, and it marks a departure from his earlier works and from others of the English Renaissance. The play demonstrates both the extent of Shakespeare’s learning and the expansiveness of his imagination.

Lil’ Abner August 8 through August 17
A fun-filled, foot-stompin' musical taken directly from the comics, It's pure entertainment; a side-splitting extravaganza for all. The show is laced with gentle satire, rib-tickling humor, and a host of brash, catchy tunes.
